My Almost Old Friend

My Almost Old Friend

Beginnings are the hardest part., to put quill to parchment and lay down words from the roiling torrents within.  Walk, do I, down empty inner corridors strewn with cobwebs thick as a hangman’s rope.  Listen in the quiet and you will hear the slow shuffling padding of footsteps disturbing the dust and detritus like garbage strewn alleys of a crumbling old city abandoned for the shining beacon on the hill.

Yet, still inhabited it is. Can you hear it, the fervent scuffling and twittering of dark things fearful of the light? There you are again my almost old friend. Your name flows over my lips unbidden. Hello Sorrow Unending, I see you have come to walk beside me yet again, to feed on my emptiness like a ravenous vampire at feeding time.  A grimace forms on your dark and cracked lips. You nod your head at me, but remain silent as we walk down the long abandoned corridors temporarily disturbing the ancient layers of dust.

Finally comes again the question as we stop and look at each other.  “What is it you seek here”? I gaze into eyes dirty grey and clouded, body covered in tattered and dirt encrusted robe. I remain silent contemplating the words and the meaning hidden within. Then I speak, quietly and laden thick with regret. “Perhaps it is the company, even of one such as you, even in darkness there is beauty”.

What is it I really seek? I journey down the convoluted pathways of mind searching for answers to the question, always the same and only question. I know the answer, yet I speak not its song. The longing fills the heart. The mind twists with the remembrance, the weight heavy on slumped and sore shoulders.  The notes rise within the mind like a spring bubbling to the surface.

I wish to lie again in the soft grasses of a warm summer’s eve.  To feel the silken strands of your hair brushing against me as you lay your head upon my chest as my arms enfold you one more time.  The warm summer breeze flows over us as we lie there unclothed. Your eyes sparkle from the reflection of the plethora of starlight, or is it the other way around? Do they reflect the beauty that flows from your eyes? I feel your velvety soft skin here against me.  We lie there together not moving, just feeling the life of each other, the give and take, almost a melding of that which lies within.

Then it fades.

We continue our walk, my almost old friend and I, not turning or looking back, ever onward.  The doorway of Ending lies before us. I know you have come to escort me there before you turn back and find another to walk with. How soon will we arrive? I do not know.

I glance over to my almost old friend and see the forlorn sorrow and loneliness that inhabits that flesh.  Then in a flash it is gone as we exchange glances. Ever on we trod.

Miles to go before I sleep. Miles to go before I sleep. Miles to go before I sleep.
